On June 8, 2009, the rabbit community lost another well respected ARBA judge, Brian L. Hartzell, age 31 of Fletcher, Ohio.
Brian L. Hartzell, 31 of 6471 E. Loy Rd., Fletcher, died suddenly Monday morning June 8, 2009 in Butler County of natural causes. He was born July 7, 1977 in Piqua to Gary L. and Sherry L. (Asher) Hartzell who survive and reside in Fletcher.
Other survivors include a sister, Stephanie (Greg) Rudasill of Piqua; three nephews, Cody, Gage, Garret; maternal grandparents, Linda Stahl of Waynesfield, Loren and Beverly Asher of Piqua; a maternal great grandfather, Leonard Franke of Piqua; and many extended other family members and friends.
Brian was a 1995 graduate of Piqua High School, obtained his Bachelors Degree from the Ohio State University and earned his Masters Degree in Business Administration from Blufton College. He was employed as a Call Center Director at the Cincinnati office of Defender Direct Company. During high school he was active in the 4-H club where he showed rabbits and cattle. This interest continued in his adult life as he was designated a Rabbit Judge in 1999 through the American Rabbit Breeders Association. Locally he served as a rabbit advisor and served as President of the Miami County Rabbit Advisors. His love for and development of rabbit breeding has earned him the distinction of being one of the top breeders of American Fuzzy Lops and Jersey Woolies, both nationally and internationally. He has been recognized as a well respected Judge and Breeder, globally, for several years.
A celebration of Brians life was held at 10:00 am Friday, June 12, 2009 at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home with Rev. Lincoln L. Robinson officiating. Visitation was from 4:00-8:00 pm Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Piqua Education Foundation, 719 E. Ash St., Piqua, OH 45356 or ones favorite charity. | Scholarships forming in Brian Hartzell's Memory |

We the members of the Miami County 4-H Advisors have watched our friend Brian Hartzell grow from a 4-H member to an advisor to a judge and to the presidency of our organization. Brian was passionate about rabbits and the 4-H program, and was an excellent teacher for our youth. As a tribute, we would like to fund a scholarship in Brian’s name with the proceeds of the entry fees and silent auction at our upcoming show (June 20, 2009 in Troy, Ohio). We have lost a good friend and judge today. Please join us at the show, and please pass the word to any and all of our fellow rabbit breeders.
